One of the overarching goals of each edition of the International Congress of Mathematicians is to make our
discipline and our international community ever more cohesive.
In this second edition of our newsletter, I would like to discuss another kind of initiative, perhaps less
visible but equally crucial for achieving cohesiveness: the 2018 IMU General Assembly (GA),
which will take place in São Paulo, Brazil.
The IMU General Assembly meets every four years, usually prior to an ICM edition, to review the past term
and to decide on IMU's future activities. The past two editions of the IMU-GA were held in:
- Gyeongju, South Korea, August, 10-11, 2014 (prior to ICM 2014 in Seoul);
- Bangalore, India, August 16-17, 2010 (prior to ICM 2010 in Hyderabad).
The 18th IMU General Assembly will be held in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, on July 29-30, 2018
(Sunday and Monday preceding the ICM in Rio de Janeiro). Some 300 participants are expected for the event,
including more than 200 delegates from the mathematical societies of over 80 countries in the world.
São Paulo is the largest Brazilian metropolitan area. It is the financial capital of the country,
being the city and boasts the largest gross domestic product of any city in Latin America. The cosmopolitan
character of the city is witnessed by the many international communities, including the Arab, Italian,
and the Japanese, that have made São Paulo their home. Gastronomy, arts and entertainment are typical of
everyday life in the city.
The choice for the venue of the General Assembly is currently under negotiation,
and it will be announced shortly. Some social activities will take place at the University of São Paulo,
which is among the sponsors of the event.
The transfer of delegates from São Paulo to ICM city Rio de Janeiro will take place on July 31st.
This will be a bus trip with a total driving time of around 5 hours. The trip will include a stop for lunch
and a short sightseeing tour of Paraty, a charming colonial city on the coast. Arrival at the Riocentro
Convention Center will be early in the evening, right on time for the opening cocktail of ICM 2018.
More details on the venue, agenda, traveling and lodging information will be announced in the next months
through this Newsletter, as well as on the web page of the ICM.
We are very excited to organize an event that will bring so many distinguished international visitors to
our city. We are committed to make the 2018 ICM-GA a memorable event for all the participants.
Meanwhile, do take a look at other recent news items in our website. We have a new article about
Gomes de Souza, the first Brazilian mathematician; a call for satellite events; and a brief
text on the selection of volunteers for the Congress.
Best Regards, and see you in São Paulo!
